Hi all, We are hiring for a Visiting position next year. Areas of specialization are open. We've committed as a department to helping VAPs build their job market portfolios as much as possible. We can offer a nice office in our suite, a reasonable teaching load so that you can work on job applications and get papers out, as well as plenty of mentoring and professional development. Our current VAP just got offered a job at another institution and that is our goal for this hire as well. In terms of helping you build your teaching portfolio, I promise to review your materials, observe you teach, and write you a teaching-focused letter on your pedagogy in a liberal arts environment. Obviously, I can't promise what the letter will say, but it will be honest and detailed. I will share it with you and you can decide whether to use it in your portfolio or not. Job link below. Here you go: Candidates should submit a CV, list of references, a cover letter and a teaching statement. The teaching statement should specifically explain the candidate’s: (a) general approach to teaching undergraduate students; (b) past teaching experience, (c) description of how your teaching, scholarship, mentoring and/or service might contribute to a liberal arts college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values; and (d) a list of mid- and upper-level courses other than the introduction to sociology that the candidate would like to teach, along with an explanation of how these courses would strengthen or supplement the department’s current offerings and curriculum. We strongly encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with our curriculum before submitting their application. For information about Furman University and its growing Sociology department, please see the web page at: www2.furman.edu/academics/sociology/Pages/default.aspx.
