I received an e-mail asking if I was interested in the 1-year position. I answered that I was interested in. Today I received another e-mail saying that the position has been filled. Was the second e-mail for the 1st TT position? I am confused.

I apologize for the way that our HR department handled this; I recognize that it has caused some confusion. We would have preferred that the two emails be sent in reverse order. Our probationary (tenure-track) search has reached a successful conclusion. That was what the second email sent to candidates was meant to convey, and that note should have been sent first.
In February of this year, the department was authorized to search for a full-time, one-year fixed-term position as a sabbatical replacement. In accordance with our union contract, this position will have the same salary structure and benefits as tenure-track faculty members. Our internal HR policies provide us with with a little more leeway in how we fill this position. All applicants from the original probationary pool have been asked to let us know if they are interested in this one-year position. That's what the first email was referring to.
I hope this clears things up.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification! When will you start reviewing the applicants for this 2nd position?

Got it. Thanks for the clarification! When will you start reviewing the applicants for this 2nd position? Throughout the entire search process, the committee is only allowed to provide information about where we are in the process and what steps have been taken. We cannot provide information about where specific candidates stand in the process, and we're discouraged from suggesting future timelines except in rather vague terms. Those have been the principles that have guided my posts here. Given that, the email sent to all candidates from HR requested that they respond by this Friday indicating if they want to be considered for the one-year position.
