Overview of Irish system:
The Irish system refers to permanent positions (indefinite contract) as "above the bar". Tenure is awarded via an internal review, which is fast and straightforward, after 1-3 years of being in a permanent position. Promotion from one grade to another is subject to external review similar to what is found in most academic contexts. Salary is non-negotiable although where you fall in the scale is. Here is a link to the payscale: www.ucd.ie/hr/pay/payscales/. These positions are similar to an assistant professorship in many contexts, but where permenancy is established at point of contract. The link at the bottom will take you to the further particulars of the positions.
