I would assume they had their Skype interview with Wesleyan, since that is the title of the thread.

Did the search committee get swept out to sea? Did they make offers to only non-sociologists and that’s why nobody seems to know anything?

I wouldn't be surprised if they went with non-sociologists. It looked like most of the faculty have PhDs from outside the discipline (mostly various kinds of "Studies"). The job ad also read like they wanted a critical theorist not a sociologist per se.

That was my dream job too but I got over it. Give up and move on with your life. If you haven’t heard anything from them, it’s probably not happening for you this year.

Post by that ad was weird on Nov 5, 2018 9:50:20 GMT -5
This was the ad, for those of you who don't remember:
"We are open to areas as diverse as crip studies, black futures, data and digitalization, law and critical legal studies, disaster studies, and visual cultures."
Although my work is pretty boring demography stuff, I like to think that I keep up with developments in critical race/feminist sociology. But I actually had to google four of those six because I had no idea what they were (the two I "understood" were critical legal studies and disaster studies). And in at least one case, I still don't really understand what it is! So maybe I'm just out of touch, but did other people look at this ad and immediately know what most of these things were? I don't even know how you'd come up with an ad like that unless you had a really unusual department.

Yes, I knew what they were but I was surprised they were looking for disaster studies. I really thought I was a good fit. But oh well.

Yes, I knew what they were but I was surprised they were looking for disaster studies. I really thought I was a good fit. But oh well. My guess is they weren’t interested in any of those areas in specific, they just picked the most marginalized subfields in the discipline they could think of and wrote an ad that would appeal to the smallest possible share of sociologists.
