Job Summary:
The Assistant Professor, in the Sociology Department provides educational services to traditional and non-traditional students during the day or evening. The Assistant Professor may be required to teach courses within his/her concentration area on campus, off-campus, online courses and possible videoconferencing depending on need of location.
Essential Functions:
Teach courses in introductory sociology, as well as specialty areas within the field.
Responsible for teaching undergraduates through active learning pedagogy and will show aptitude and inclination for engaging students in research, both through individual mentored research as well as course-embedded undergraduate research experiences.
Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students and is consistent with University requirements.
Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals and objectives, in order to maximize student achievement.
Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities that serve the needs and capabilities of the students and are compatible with the physical facilities.
Manage student behavior in the classroom.
Continually communicate to students (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, as well as student progress.
Actively participate in and work with University personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum.
Exhibit a commitment to scholarly activities and engage in professional, university, and community service.
Participate in professional growth activities including staff meetings, in-service, and staff development as required or assigned.
Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
Ensure that the classroom or instructional environment is healthy, safe, and conducive to learning.
Participate in extra-curricular activities as requested by the head of the department or the Dean of the School.
Serve on various committees.
Belong to educational/professional associations (within concentration) and participate in their activities.
Take attendance and keep attendance registers, according to JSU policy.
Performs other duties as assigned by the department head or Dean.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate or ABD in one of the content areas managed within the Department of Sociology
Accomplishments sufficient to indicate the ability to meet requirements of the rank of Professor of Sociology at JSU in teaching, service, and scholarly publications
