I don't know about should. But as someone who took a job at a small directional university (because it was close to a large metro area so my spouse could have a career as well), I gotta say it's been eye opening just how much different people treat me. Things in no order of relevance: - I've had a former ASA president tell me that my job was like being a high school teacher. - I've been kicked out of an ASA section council meeting, even as big shots in the field and their grad students who were also not on the council were allowed to stay. - A former R1 assistant professor who didn't get tenure because they had about half as many publications as I did teaching a 4-4 acted like they were doing a massive favor by considering being interviewed by us. - Graduate student from a top 3 department rolled his eyes at me when I pointed out a fairly basic math mistake in his research during a roundtable, only to blush and shut up when the big shot next to me confirmed the error

People can be so bloody condescending sometimes. Why in the world were you kicked out of the ASA section council meeting? How could they even justify that when they were allowing non-members to stay?
