An uncomfortable question. What impact is a recent DWI conviction likely to have on the hiring process, given that I would disclose it before a background check and presumably it would come up during the background check? It's my only criminal conviction ever, and it's a misdemeanor. But it is recent. Is this basically a non-issue for faculty hires, or does it depend on the particular Provost/President?

Honestly, it really will depend on the SC. I am currently serving on three search committees. I personally would not vote against you if everything else looked good on your application. I think the best thing to do is be upfront about it. Make sure the rest of your application is strong. Hope for the best and make sure you are prepared to talk about it in an interview. Make sure you talk about how you have reformed yourself. Bottom line: no one is perfect and sociologists should know that more than others.

Thanks, Depends. By the way, I ended up being reassured by a nice lady in HR that it won't be a problem and that no one outside of HR would even find out.
