Good luck La Paloma! Anything from Arapahoe CC (1/15) or Front Range CC (2/15), both in the Denver area?

Congratulations to those with interviews!
For those with interviews at Front Range or SPCC, are you local candidates?

Congratulations to those with interviews! For those with interviews at Front Range or SPCC, are you local candidates? I'm interviewing at SPSCC next week, first round, not local. Interview is over skype. Have never adjuncted at SPSCC, or another CC in WA. That said, I do have some ties to the area (undergrad at UW). Hope this helps you!

La Paloma, did you happen to ask Columbia Basin about their timeframe for moving forward/next round? I missed the chance when we accidentally ran over the time talking about other things, so just curious. Good luck with your interviews!

I applied but wasn't selected for an interview. I'm thinking it's probably my relative lack of experience -- 2 years part time teaching at a CC. And maybe because I'm not in CA right now? Your thoughts? I ask because I have 6+ CA CC apps in the works and feel like I may just not have the experience to be competitive.

Last year I was reimbursed for California CC interviews that I traveled more than 150 miles for, max reimbursement $300. Made it to final round for two SoCal jobs that were ultimately taken by locals.

From what I know, this year is "the perfect storm" of retirements and restored funding across California Community Colleges (CCCs). I've put in 10 applications, and there were at least 20+ full-time, Soc jobs posted between December15 and March16. CCCs tend to preference folks who have direct experience in CCCs, and also look for exceptional teachers with deep experience/interest serving diverse, non-traditional populations. Two years of part time teaching may not be enough given the long backlog of folks seeking full-time opportunities after years of adjuncting. Hang in there - we're all in this together!

Cal Dreaming: Do you have any insights on the CCC Exchange interviews held in mid-winter? Do many people go to those and do preliminary interviews? I've seen them mentioned in the occasional job ad.
I'm the poster who originally asked about California. If it helps, I am a full time CC instructor and I've not been able to land a single interview with California CCs, despite the "perfect storm" this year. It has surprised me, since I am consistently able to get some first-round interviews in other metro areas, though getting interviews is far from predictable. It may just be that there are that many more people trying to teach at CCs in Cali due to the importance of CC education there. Ultimately, I've also been beat out by locals a few times after reaching the finalist round in other metro areas. I think CC Dreaming is right to observe that there are deep pools of well-respected, already-tested adjuncts backlogged in every metro area; 58% of all CC classes are now taught by adjuncts. Also keep in mind that local preference isn't just an arbitrary decision on the part of search committees. Partnerships in the local community are a major tenure or evaluation criterion at most CCs. I think of this emphasis sort of like I would think about research activities at four-years; though it can look different at each institution, it is every bit as important as the research portion of faculty evaluation elsewhere. As such, already being invested locally or on campus in any number of ways helps with the impressively bureaucratic rating sheets and standardized questions CCs rely on to give "neutrality" to the hiring process. It's important for applicants to understand how different that bureaucratic hiring process is against small, teaching-focused four years where the hiring process is usually informal and more open to getting to know candidates and their strengths along the way. Hope these thoughts are helpful for someone out there.
