The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an innovative and visionary leader to Chair the Department of Sociology. The department offers a BA and MA in Sociology and a PhD in Medical Sociology. Research in the department focuses on medical sociology and health-related topics. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar with administrative experience, experience with external research funding, and vision to lead a department that emphasizes research excellence, quality undergraduate and graduate instruction, and community outreach. Appointment at the full professor level is expected. A doctoral degree in sociology or a related field is required.
With over 18,500 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching is prominent, and the Department of Sociology collaborates closely with multiple units across campus. UAB ranks in the top ten nationally for student diversity, with over one hundred countries represented on campus. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and offers a vibrant cultural community with a wide array of recreational opportunities.
