I did last year, and it was hopeless, I think they said they received something like 6,000 applications (though this was for several disciplines and several, but not that many, post-docs), if we are talking about the same thing.

Okay, you made me go back and find the email they sent at some point in the process last year asking people to tell them if they still wanted to be considered, and I realized that talked out of my ass a little bit when I responded, but just a little bit: This is what they wrote: "We received a large number of applications (over 1700) for only five fellowships beginning in 2015-2016.." So, "only" 1,700, not 6,000... Sorry about the exaggerated statement earlier.

Thanks, again, for (all) the info. Both numbers are scary, but not enough to keep me from applying anyway. It's good to know, though, what I'm up against. Thanks!

Do you know whether they have interviews or campus visits for people who are selected into the long list?

Have heard nothing yet...

They should be narrowing down the applicant pool even more so now (sending them to the depts. for review). Skype interviews for the top 15 were scheduled for early February last year. Notifications by end of Feb. This year, there will be 8-9 fellows chosen.

Last year, there was a sociologist (Yvonne Kwan) selected out of the 1700. So, I'm hopeful.

I got my rejection, so you're probably still in the running. Congrats
