This Chronicle article might be of help to some people out there. Do your advisors do an adequate job preparing you for the job market? If not, there may be hope (for a little $, of course): chronicle.com/article/To-Professors-Re-Your/129121/I'm curious though--are most peoples' advisors as selfish with their time, and as 'hands-off' as the author of the article suggests? How much detailed advice do they provide you with? Is it enough?

There is some truth there, but don't lose sight of the fact that this person is trying to drum up business for an academic consulting agency ("my agency is booked head for months" ... somehow, I doubt that). This is the same person who wrote that you should never talk about your dissertation -- EVER!

Conflict of interest issues with that Chronicle author aside, this can happen for various reasons.
For one thing, some departments expect that only a certain percentage of people will go into tenure track faculty jobs, so they don't necessarily feel obligated to carefully groom graduate students. Are you in a large cohort? That's one tip off.

^ Does anyone else smell a troll here? If so, preying upon people's insecurities on this board is pretty low. Maybe there is something to be said for crass anti-materialism of the "ivory tower" after all.

Troll or no, it's kind of a good point.

No, I'm not a troll, but I can see how you might get that impression. However, this is the Pre ABD section, for us folks who aren't on the market yet. I certainly did not intend to raise insecurities. I was simply wondering if people had ever considered external sources for job preparation. It's not something that I was aware of until reading the article.
I THINK I'm in the fortunate position of having an advisor who will help out greatly with job prep issues, but I was wondering about others' experiences--and also about others' thoughts regarding this particular job prep 'service.'
