We just got approval for a new line. Job ad hasn't been finalized yet. Will likely be interviewing at ASA through the ES. Details to come.

As a frequent reader of this board last year, let me say that I really appreciate when search committee or department members post updates here and are upfront about what the department is looking for. Thank you for the heads up this year.

Job ad is now up through our HR dept website as well as the ASA ES. -kk The Department of Sociology at Furman University invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship beginning Fall 2016. A Ph.D. in Sociology by time of appointment with specialization or strong interest in urban/community sociology is preferred, along with an interest to participate in a thriving poverty studies program. Other substantive areas are open but might include two of the following: social inequality, environmental sociology, or family and society. Candidates should also have an interest in teaching introduction to sociology. Teaching load is five courses per year, with the opportunity to teach First Year Seminars. We strongly encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with our curriculum before submitting their application. For information about Furman University and its growing sociology department, please see the web page at: www2.furman.edu/academics/sociology/Pages/default.aspx. Furman University is a private, highly selective liberal arts college of 2,700 residential students located in Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville has a thriving downtown and international community and is within a short driving distance of Charlotte, Atlanta, and Asheville. Greenville is a growing city that provides numerous research opportunities, and Furman has a strong relationship with its communities and leadership. Furman University is an equal opportunity employer strongly committed to diversity within its community. Furman offers employment benefits to domestic partners of employees.

Urban soc ABD here. If I didn't receive a response on the ES should I assume that I won't be considered if I formally apply?

Full disclosure, I am NOT from Furman. Your question seems to imply you expressed interest on the ES site but haven't heard back...considering the ad has been up for only a few days, I wouldn't assume a non-response at this point means anything. A lot of the ES universities/colleges have had ads up way longer and have yet to schedule anyone (and in the past I think some places have scheduled people literally days before ASA). I'd say give Furman some time to get their ducks in a row/figure out their schedules/look at the candidates' CVs who expressed interest. It's too early to assume anything.

We haven't responded to anyone yet. Sorry. We are still organizing amongst ourselves who will be able to fill what slots on the calendar.
Also, no matter what happens through the ES, still apply. I would suggest you do this for all jobs.
Please be aware that candidates don't get ASA ES invites for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it is because we simply can't meet with everyone. Sometimes it is because we have a clear sense of what a candidate can or cannot teach/research so we don't need to talk to her/him. Last year, both of hires had gone through the ES. The hire before them did not.
Our application is all electronic and designed to be as easy as possible for job market candidates (we only require a cover letter and CV at first). We all went through this process and understand the pressure/stress/anxiety you are all feeling. So please, no matter what happens with the ES, apply to any jobs you would take and are reasonably qualified for. -kk

As someone who interviewed with Furman several years ago, they are a class department. I encourage you all to apply. Greenville is cool spot too.

If you haven't heard anything, I'm sorry for the wait. We've only got two interviewers going to chicago this year, so we are limited in how many folks we can talk too. There have been a few that we would like to meet, but couldn't find a time. If you didn't get contacted by us, you should expect a note from the chair this week or next. And no matter what happens: Apply for the job. This goes for our job and all other jobs for which you are reasonably qualified. I'll be keeping on eye on the inbox all the way up to--and during--the meetings in case I can move anything around and open up a time slot.

Once again, I'd like to thank you for being so open and transparent. I understand search committees frequently have their hands tied with regards to certain bits of information, but stuff like this regarding the employment service is stuff that is incredibly helpful.
