Does anyone have any suggestions for good contemporary social theory textbooks? I used Salerno this year, but my students hated it (too focused on names and not enough discussion or examples). In the past I used Wallace and Wolf, but it seems to have gone out of print.

I liked Kivisto's Illuminating Social Life in that it linked theory to contemporary problems that students could relate to. However, not all chapters are equally good. Some have good explanations of the original theory and a good applications, while others are really poor. I would complement it with other readings or with a full reader textbook if you want them to read the original texts
