Here's the updated table. Usual caveats apply, see above for details.
2007-10 2007-10 2007 2008 2009 2010 | 2011 | Month Avg. Cum. Avg ---------------------------------------|-------|-------------------- June 35 35 29 27 | 32 | 32 32 July 110 78 30 63 | 49 | 70 102 August 96 90 50 79 | 89 | 79 181 September 35 41 70 84 | 147 | 58 239 October 94 94 101 115 | 92 | 101 340 November 53 29 58 32 | -- | 43 383 December 25 41 36 37 | -- | 35 417 ---------------------------------------|-------|-------------------- June-December 448 408 374 437 | 409 | 60 417
The ASA Job Bank has listed more pages of ads through October of this year than through December of 2008 or 2009. The bad news for some of us is that the number of new ads is likely to taper off dramatically from here on out. I did, btw, look at some of the suggested duplicate postings last month. Yes, there were a few, I counted three from the list of five supplied by other posters. Maybe there's more, maybe this is also consistent with what has happened in previous years. This is a rough metric, take it for what it's worth. I'm unlikely to turn this data project into a publication, so I'm content to just count the pages and report the totals and then do something more productive!

Thanks for the update. Even though it's just a rough estimate, it looks like this year is on course to be slightly better than the last 4 markets.

thanks for the update.
The tapering off is disappointing, since it indicates that the market is not as good (or less bad) as originally thought, and many searches just happened earlier. Maybe departments are trying to move things up to lock their candidates in.

Wow, November is already in the rear view mirror. Here's some more updated numbers. Caveats, yada yada.
2007-10 2007-10 2007 2008 2009 2010 | 2011 | Month Avg. Cum. Avg ---------------------------------------|-------|-------------------- June 35 35 29 27 | 32 | 32 32 July 110 78 30 63 | 49 | 70 102 August 96 90 50 79 | 89 | 79 181 September 35 41 70 84 | 147 | 58 239 October 94 94 101 115 | 92 | 101 340 November 53 29 58 32 | 64 | 43 383 December 25 41 36 37 | -- | 35 417 ---------------------------------------|-------|-------------------- June-December 448 408 374 437 | 473 | 60 417
This is the strongest market we've seen in a while, at least according to my crude little metric. Let's hope the ads keep rolling in for a few more weeks.

And because I know that somebody will be asking very soon... Here's what the winter/spring period has looked like for the last three market seasons. (I'm missing data for earlier years.) 2009-11 2009-11 2009 2010 2011 | 2012 | Month Avg. Cum. Avg ---------------------------------------|-------|--------------------- January 29 34 46 | -- | 36 36 February 32 35 27 | -- | 31 68 March 25 21 34 | -- | 27 94 April 16 16 15 | -- | 16 110 May 4 14 24 | -- | 14 124 ---------------------------------------|-------|--------------------- Previous June-Dec 408 374 437 | 473 | 406 January-May 106 120 146 | -- | 124 Season Total 514 494 583 | 473 | 530
Many (certainly not all) of those April and May ads had start dates for the next fall, usually emergency fill-in positions.

I accidentally deleted my previous post from 01/02/12, with the updated December totals. Here's how things ended up for 2011: 2007-10 2007 2008 2009 2010 | Average | 2011 ---------------------------------------|---------|------- June 35 35 29 27 | 32 | 32 July 110 78 30 63 | 70 | 49 August 96 90 50 79 | 79 | 89 September 35 41 70 84 | 58 | 147 October 94 94 101 115 | 101 | 92 November 53 29 58 32 | 43 | 64 December 25 41 36 37 | 35 | 51 =======================================|=========|======= June-December 448 408 374 437 | 417 | 524
Here are the January through May totals for 2012. 2009-11 2009 2010 2011 | Average | 2012 ---------------------------------------|---------|------- Previous June-Dec 408 374 437 | 406 | 524 ---------------------------------------|---------|------- January 29 34 46 | 36 | 44 February 32 35 27 | 31 | 39 March 25 21 34 | 27 | 33 April 16 16 15 | 16 | 26 May 4 14 24 | 14 | 19 ---------------------------------------|---------|------- January-May 106 120 146 | 124 | 161 =======================================|=========|======= Season Total 514 494 583 | 530 | 685
Edited to add February, March, April, May totals.

Hey archivist, you do such a nice job with the pretty tables... let's see how we did in February. Hi. I added the February totals by editing my previous post. I'll continue to update that table for a few more months. (I'm trying to think of some clever joke about how February's Leap Day makes it challenging to make meaningful comparisons for this year's market, but it's just not happening for me today.) I wouldn't expect to see many changes from the previous years' trends from here on out.

any updates archivist?As I mentioned earlier, I'm now editing the table in my post dated Jan 31, 2012 with updated figures every month. Since I'm only changing three numbers at a time - the monthly, period and season figures - it makes more sense to me than reproducing the entire table. You can talk me out of that if there's some good reason to do it differently. But I suppose that I could at least post a little note announcing the update. In March the ASA Job Bank contained 33 pages of jobs, pushing the season total to 640. According to this crude metric the market is noticeably stronger than at least the previous 3. I hope you're around on this board next year ... you provide a great service.Unfortunately, it looks like I will. I am going to stay at my current less-than-desirable position for yet another year, but I'll be trying once again to upgrade in the fall. (I'm not complaining, by the way, I really am grateful to just have a job. I only wish I was closer to my family.)

The ASA Job Bank listed 26 pages of ads in April. All but a couple of them had start dates for this fall. As you can guess, none of those were tenure-track. I have updated the table in my previous post dated Jan 31, 2012.
