Is your friend the VAP listed on the department website? I can't see anyone who would fit the advertisement .

Sometimes people spread this type of rumor to dissuade others from applying. Not accusing - just raising the possibility, since the VAP rumor seems unsubstantiated.

Yeah, I'm calling bullsh** too.
I'm still gonna go there and kick ass if I get the campus invite.

This is an intended inside hire for their current VAP. Info via a reliable personal source. Sorry… my dreams were crushed, too. The only non-TT faculty that I see on their website are anthropologists. I know Rhodes is also hiring in anthropology for an archaeologist and that job description fits one of their anthropology folks. But I don't see any sociologist on their faculty who is doing work in social movements and gender/sexuality. Unless there's a VAP sociologist there who studies gender/sexuality and contemporary social movements, and is not listed on their website, I think the inside hire may be for the anthro/archaeology position. The ad for this year says "social movements, sociology of disability, or gender and sexuality". So, the candidate doesn't have to do all of that. See ad from 2012 - very similar to this year. socjobs.proboards.com/thread/1127?q=rhodesThey didn't say VAP in the 2012 ad - they said "three-year position in Sociology at the level of Assistant Professor." A little research can tell you who was hired in 2012 and that their 3-year position is up after this academic year. But they're not marked as VAP. You'll notice that the wording between the two ads swaps "new media" for "disability." All of that said, if you get an invite to campus, you should go and kick ass!

Yep, one of the "Assistant Professors" in the department does gender, social movements, and (if you do a little digging) is also doing sociology of disability. This is the most obvious inside hire in the history of obvious inside hires. I hope whoever else interviews on campus there can appreciate getting a little practice in for other job interviews. Cuz that's all it will be.

My intention was not to crush dreams, or to be ingenuous or dissuade anyone. I wasn't really in the mood to jinx my friend and colleague's situation, nor was I comfortable revealing who it was. Now that holy crap has given you as much info as possible, it appears as if I cannot ruin or jinx it. So, yeah, barring something crazy, this is an inside hire. I was also hit once by an inside hire, so I get how many of you feel. It is the nature of the beast, and unfortunately, the nature of academia.
