Going to assume since it is so late in the semester, that interviews probably won't even be scheduled until spring semester.

If that's the case, I assume they'll miss out on some of the stronger applicants. Weird strategy.

I'm sure it's not that you are a terrible candidate worksforme-- more likely just that you are a less than psychotically perfect one. welcome to the academic proletariat!

I have it on good authority that campus visit invites may be likely to go out by next week.

If that's the case, I assume they'll miss out on some of the stronger applicants. Weird strategy. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. Best laid plans and all, university Equity committees don't always agree on shortlists, department outside reviewers don't always agree on shortlists, and Deans don't always agree on shortlists, and each time they get sent back to the hiring department. All that adds days and weeks and poof, the quarter or semester is over and candidates can't be brought in for weeks or months, especially around the holidays when faculty or the Dean are traveling. There's a lot of crazy behind the scenes. It sucks all around, but it's the way it is.

Just to clarify, when you refer to "Equity committees" are you saying there are committees that evaluate the shortlist a sociology department has selected in terms of whether it is ostensibly "diverse" enough by some metric? If so, I truly didn't realize that's how it works. What are the metrics for diversity, out of curiosity?

Different universities have different processes, but yes, many have equity committees that approve long- and shortlists. JMU has one: stars.aashe.org/institutions/james-madison-university-va/report/2013-12-23/PAE/diversity-and-affordability/PAE-6/These committees often collect data from a discipline's parent organization (e.g. ASA) on the diversity of recent PhDs and compare it to the pool of applicants. That's what those personal data cards are helping to inform when you apply to a department. Was the advertisement disseminated widely enough to net a diverse pool? How then does the department's long and short-list compare to the ASA and applicant pool data? Etc.

I thought those personal data cards weren't being used to select candidates. Sounds like you're saying an equity committee can tell a department to ditch certain candidates if the long-shortlist is too homogeneous, based on their looking at this race/ethnicity information. True?

This is a long-ass time to wait. Too long. I'm thinking campus invites have already been made and those fortunate souls don't happen to post on this board.
