Job Description: Assistant Professor-Sociology
The Division of Social Sciences at Penn State University, Abington invites applications for a tenure-line position in Sociology at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 2015. The particular area within Sociology is open but the candidate`s substantive interests would ideally complement other areas of the program (e.g. inequality, culture, gender).
The candidate should have evidence of a strong record of research and a willingness to apply for external funding. Demonstration of effective teaching and mentoring abilities, a passion for working with undergraduate students, and of the potential for scholarly productivity are required. Candidates should have experience or proficiency in teaching Qualitative Methods. Common course load at Penn State Abington is 3 courses per semester (usually 3-4 course preparations per academic year). The administration is committed to the development of junior faculty’s scholarship and works to minimize the number of course preps each year. The college has a considerable undergraduate research participant pool as well as several shared lab spaces. Internal funding is available for research purposes, as well as travel.
Candidates must have a Sociology PhD at the time of appointment. Applicants are asked to electronically submit a cover letter to include a statement of teaching interests and philosophy, a current curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness (if available) and a description of current and planned research programs, and three letters of recommendation in one document.
