That department is notorious for in-fighting. No senior leadership. These losses + Zachary Zimmer are devastating. They are letting hyper-productive faculty to private and state schools. Money might explain transitions to privates, but not to states. Obvious retention problem. That department will never be anything but second or third tier. Definition of mediocrity.

Perhaps that is a bit of an overstatement. I know the senior person quite well that is leaving for a position at a private university. He has always said positive things about Utah's sociology department, most of his colleagues, and the graduate program.
