Yes, it's expensive. There are a lot of outlying areas that are beautiful, though. True, they will receive 900+ applications. One of those will be yours. Even if it is rejected you at least tried.

maybe you're a relatively privileged white, heterosexual male that recognizes privilege in its various forms and tries to dismantle the structures of privilege in your personal daily interactions, through community service, and through your teaching and research? probably not,if he asked the question in the first place!

a 1 page statement identifying the applicant’s contributions, or potential contributions, to diversity, along with their ability to work with a culturally international student body I'm a white, heterosexual, relatively privileged man. What do I contribute to diversity? Don't I undermine diversity? Genuinely stumped. If you have to ask.... you probably don't.

There is a new position at UBC (TT, Field-open as well). Any updates on that? Why late compared to the first one? Probably UBC won't hire in the next 10 years after this second one.

I'm a white, heterosexual, relatively privileged man. What do I contribute to diversity? Don't I undermine diversity? Genuinely stumped. If you have to ask.... you probably don't. It might be his having to ask is also an outcome of "diversity" automatically making people think of the usual categories of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and disability, i.e., only the categories monitoring forms are required to ask about. While he is privileged on these, he might contribute to diversity if we expand our ideas about diveristy. E.g., what religion are you? I'm in the US and Protestant Christianity is dominant here. In college I was literaly the first Catholic some of my new classmates had ever met; same with the few Muslim and Buddhist students. What socioeconomic class did you grow up in? It says hes relatively privileged but has it always been like that? Were you the first in your famly to go to college? That gives someone a different perspective than us folks who's grandparents were college educated so it was something we just grew up orienting towards. What region of your country are you from? I presently teach in the rural midwest and the culture of the students here is farming and hunting. Were they, even the straight white males, to go to a univeristy in a big city they would contribute to the cultural diversity due to it being urban. Im not saying straight white men ought to cite these types of categorical identities as if they have historically disadvantaged them as much as things like race and gender have done for non-whites and women; but I do think it helps the intellectual reorientiation towrads multiculturalism to sometimes think of diversity beyond the categories countries collect data on due to historic discrimination.

I am not applying as I am only interested in SLAC's but I have a connection there. They are interested in a productive and innovative research agenda's so are keeping an open mind on areas. My sense is that if you are a productive researcher with an aggressive research agenda it might be worth applying. Good luck! ... unless you're Canadian ...
