Definitely this is one of the strongest hires I've seen at the assistant level. Looks like UVic is on the up and up.

2010 PhD graduate from "top Canadian school," fully funded postdoc, several publications in top-20 journals and currently unemployed like a stock of Canadian PhD's, jerk.

This is a VERY strong hire. Anyone who has been advocating for merit hires should be celebrating this decision. I choose a system on merit over any other, and its hard to imagine that there is anyone who can beat this guy's CV, both in terms of accomplishment and in terms of soc/crim fit (at least, I hope there isn't, because that bodes very bad for my odds at getting a job in this recessionary market LOL!). Quite honestly, I didn't expect to see anyone like this out there. I'm both surprised and impressed.
I'm glad that Garry Gray is off the market - my congrats.
