My starting cohort was 24. 8 dropped out in the first few years, so that leaves 16 of us who made it to ABD stage. After this year, three will still be working on their dissers, but that means 13 of us are out there. One works in academic administration. Two teach in foreign institutions (they were international students to begin with). That leaves ten of us. Seven of us have jobs. Clearly not everyone graduates this year - the spread varies widely and depends on if you did a quant or qual dissertation and if you came in with a MA and got to cut out a few years of course work. But if other cohorts are similar to mine (and the data suggests they are pretty similar until the more recent cohorts), the number of graduates each year remains pretty high, roughly 8-12 a year, with a placement rate that is up to 95% for folks a few years out (see the article in the Chron about Dean Savage's tracking data).
Diploma mills don't get jobs. Their graduates don't have publications or research experience or teaching experience. CUNY grads tend to have all three, which makes us quite marketable. Our pubs might not be top notch (though a few are), but we have over 100 affiliated faculty to choose from and lots of opportunity for research projects. Most of our funding is dependent upon teaching within the CUNY system, where we teach everyone from community college to honors college students, plus adjunct opportunities at the myriad other ugrad schools in the NYC area so many of us even have SLAC experience. Plus a bunch of fellowship opportunities in pedagogy, instructional technology, assessment and evaluation, etc. And unlike a lot of other programs which have limited specializations for grad students, you can basically come to CUNY and study whatever the hell you want and find appropriate advisors, research projects, and classes to teach.
Anyway, I'm obviously biased and proud of my school.

Sorry to turn this thread into a brief CUNY-love detour - but I just want to add to what the last CUNY person said. Speaking from my personal experience - the jobs I interviewed for were at institutions that expected a fair amount of teaching and research - they wanted dynamic researchers and people that would actually fill their classroom and keep undergrads happy. Thats a lot to balance - and so having the CUNY experience of teaching a regular 2-2 course load while publishing, writing a dissertation, and not going insane in the process - not to mention teaching in one of the most amazingly diverse schools in the nation - were all signs that I might be able to handle the pressure that these jobs would entail. I hope that turns out to actually be the case... only time will tell I guess - but I can say that making it through a CUNY PhD gives you a really deep confidence that you can handle anything thats going to be thrown your way - and I suspect that that confidence comes out in our job interviews, campus visits, talks, etc.
Also - the places I interviewed were less worried about the fact that I never published in AJS or some other top-flight sociology journal (and to be honest - I likely never will) - and more interested in the fact that I am capable of publishing at all while still remaining an interesting human being.
But super proud to be coming out of CUNY! (if you couldn't tell)

Alright, we get it that CUNY is the greatest program ever. Apparently no other programs have strong expectations for teaching, publishing, and have diverse student bodies. How about we keep this focused on who is getting hired where and you start a separate thread wherein you can espouse your love for your home institution.

"Apparently no other programs have strong expectations for teaching, publishing, and have diverse student bodies."
This is also not the thread for ridiculous strawman interpretations of what people actually wrote.

Okay, enough snark and CUNY advertisements on this thread. Congrats on the success, CUNY! Now back to naming names, please.

I think the best way to describe the (insert favorite adjective here) sentiments expressed above is to borrow a phrase from the immortal members of Team America. CUNY! Fuck yeah!
Now seriously, let's get back to naming names...

I know some CUNY grads that wouldn't be very happy with how this thread is carrying on (without hating). Let's see if we can stay with the CUNY narrative and stay on task: name names, please.
