Anyone have any experience with the ASA section student paper awards? Papers were only due March 1st, but anyone know when winners are contacted?

Good question. I won two paper awards last year, submitting both for the March 1 deadline. The first notification came May 16th and the second cane July 5th, so a wide variation. Good luck!

I have won a few ASA awards in the past and am currently on a couple of committees this year. I don't expect committees will deliberate minimally before April (if that). It varies by sec tion but I don't think you should expect any notification for a few months.

I've been told I won awards in late spring and over the summer; been told I lost them over the summer; and not been notified either way (that I hadn't won).

.. I agree with all that! Also varies by section in the amount of papers they get. Some sections, even a banner year is about 5 or 6 papers. Other sections have over 50.

I really do appreciate it when they email applicants letting us know we didn't win. Especially since the decision gets made over many months, that means you can spend six months hoping you'll get an email that you won an award, when you could've been out of the running for months.

Has anyone heard anything back on their subsection grad paper awards yet? Thanks!

At this point, I think most of them have made their decisions. Of those that have made decisions, it seems most of them have announced it over the section listservs (but not all of them).

That is what I figured. But my section has still not announced anything on the listserv. And our bi-annual newsletter said they would announce it at ASA. Doesn't it still seem likely that they would let the competitors know by now, though?

I'm a member of five different sections and as of now, only two of them have announced winners via their listservs.
