I received an email today asking for me to confirm a few things from my application, but no word regarding interviews or campus visits.

Thanks for the update. They were asking for additional info or just clarifying questions?

received an email today. 15 long-listers have been contacted, and asked to confirm that they are still interested in the position. Sounds like the short list will happen in the new year.

Anyone have any information about this department, what it's like to live/work there? This is a 3/3 load, correct?

Well, the person they are replacing didn't get tenure, but I think that is more because of the university than the department. The individual faculty are good people, but the department has taken some big hits with faculty departures and untimely faculty deaths in recent years. SDSU is a place in transition, which can be tough or a great place for change. Feel it out if you get an interview.

SDSU had lots of older faculty since people who got tenure stayed for years. Most of the great faculty I had as an undergrad are retired and long gone. If you study social movements, the journal mobilization has connections to Hank Johnson at SDSU.

As a rule, CSUs are 4-4's.

What is the best way to find out what the teaching load will be (and whether buy-outs are possible)? Also - who was the assistant professor who didn't get tenure?

I went to SDSU for my MA and I don't remember ANY non-adjunct teaching anything close to a 4-4.

What's the story here?

Hmm - when you were in the MA program, what were your impressions of the faculty (i.e., work well together?, like each other?, crazy department politics?). Also - do you know who it was that didn't get tenure. It's interesting that this department has ZERO assistant professors right now....

I suspect naming names of faculty who were denied tenure is inappropriate. I imagine it's difficult enough without it being discussed on a public forum.

Agreed with Erm on his/her point about naming names. Any other news on this position? Have interviews been scheduled?
