Society and Mental Health is a relatively new (2011) ASA specialty journal. Does anyone have experience with them?
Also, what are your thoughts on new journals like Society and Mental Health or the new race ASA journal. Because of their affiliation with ASA, will they have relatively good prestige despite not being around long enough for an impact factor?

While I’ve misplaced my crystal ball;) I suspect that SMH will be second only to JHSB in Med Soc/health specialty journals. Look at editorial board, peeps publishing there, and quality of stuff published in a very short period of time.

I agree with styles above. Ed board and who's publishing there means a lot. My bet is that SMH will grow even further in significance and prestige.

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. I ended up sending my paper to Society and Mental Health.... and just received a rejection. Bummed about the latter, but I'm impressed with the review process. 3 decent reviews in basically 4 weeks.
I also talked to a senior person in my dept. He has a big name in the Mental Health field and is highly published. Although he has a recent pub in this journal, his first paper was rejected. My overall since is that this will indeed be a selective and respected journal.

I've submitted two manuscripts to SMH, and both experiences were great - very fast turnaround on initial review (about 2 months) and R&R (1 month or less) and helpful reviews. One was accepted after the first R&R and another after a second (pretty minor) R&R.
