The Kinder Institute Urban Health Program (UHP) at Rice University (kinder.rice.edu/urbanhealth/) is offering one postdoctoral fellowship (two years in length) to begin July 2013. This multidisciplinary health project involves sociologists, environmental engineers, atmospheric scientists, and biomedical informatics specialists who are working to create a rich database of air quality, sociodemographic, and clinical data in order to test associations between air quality and health in a major urban area. The postdoc will be part of a large cohort of postdocs in Rice’s sociology department working on a variety of research projects, and there will be opportunities for training, collaboration, and professional development. The posting as well as instructions on how to apply appear below.
The fellow will be housed in both the UHP and Department of Sociology and work primarily with faculty members Justin Denney and Rachel Kimbro on the Air Quality and Health project, a Houston-based study linking measures of air quality (including ozone and particulate matter) to clinical medical records and neighborhood characteristics to understand the severity and distribution of environmental health risks. The fellow will also work with Robert Griffin, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice and Barry Lefer, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science, Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Houston. There are no teaching responsibilities associated with the fellowship. The application deadline is May 15, 2013.
This is a two-year appointment beginning on or about July 1, 2013. The annual salary is $52,000 and comes with Rice employee benefits. Rice is an equal opportunity employer.
Experience working with large and complex data sets is a must and research experience in areas such as environment and health and social determinants of health are preferred.
