Does anybody have experience submitting to Poetics? I understand the particular stance of the journal, but I'm curious about response times, review quality, etc. Thanks!

I published in Poetics a few years ago. They were very speedy, had really helpful constructive reviews, and very good editor feedback. Very good turnaround time all around. It was a really positive experience for me.

I too had a positive experience and recently published with the journal. Really good feedback from reviewers that strengthened my paper. Very good editors that highlighted exactly what I needed to do with the paper. Very fast turnaround time.

Does anybody know what is going on there right now? I am hearing about submissions getting held up a very long time.

Is the hold up / delay on submissions still going on?

I have a paper that has been under review there for 13 months so far...so yes.

Waiting - that's crazy. First review or first review plus R&R? It's really a shame that there's no accountability for journals (except for people not to submit there). Delays happen - that's fine. But that seems extremely excessive and authors have nothing to do except wait. Especially since it's such a long time, pulling it doesn't seem like an option because "what if" reviews are in...then if you pull it, you would lose over a year without much substantive feedback. (I use the universal you, not you, waiting, specifically).

Have you tried contacting the editors? One of the former co-editors left in late 2012 and your paper may have gotten lost in the shuffle. I reviewed for them last year and looking at the online system the paper I reviewed took less than 4 months between initial submission and editor letter with decision.

First review. Four months ago the editor said (in response to an email) that the reviews were in and a decision letter was forthcoming. I've tried to contact him since, with no luck.

First review. Four months ago the editor said (in response to an email) that the reviews were in and a decision letter was forthcoming. I've tried to contact him since, with no luck. That's insane and rather unprofessional. It takes a lot of effort and time to write an article. You would think editors would keep this in mind. Have you considered withdrawing the paper? Even if you get an R&R, you might run into same delays and unresponsiveness.

Yeah, I think you might want to send another email to the editor asking what is up, maybe with the assistant editor CC'd. Emails can certainly slip through the cracks. You've waited a decent amount of time, so just preface the email apologetically and send a gentle reminder asking what is up.
Other people please correct me if you think this is a bad idea.

Thanks for you concern, but I have done that already, don't worry! I just posted here because I wanted to keep others from having the same experience.

I have had an experience nearly the same as the one described by "waiting." Upwards of a year waiting for first review, promised a decision letter months ago.
