Let's be honest: the reason why we want to see who was hired is so that we can google their CV and to gripe about the fact that we didn't get the offer. I don't know; I'm going to take a kinder view and hope that people are interested in looking at hired folks' CV's to get a sense of what it takes to get job x in this market, and what is being valued. Being aware of that could help advisors better advise (some really have no clue what the market is like now), and help people calibrate expectations/applications. Personally, if I applied to a job I didn't get and saw that the person who got it had 5 top tier publications (or whatever) I would take that rejection much less personally.

I would agree with this except that half the time the choice seems somewhat idiosyncratic -- it's not always obvious what the decision was based on, and so not something you could necessarily try to duplicate the next time around. In some cases, though, when the hire looks radically different from me, I agree with you that I feel better -- they were clearly looking for just a different type of candidate (which could be about publications, but could also be about other stuff, like theoretical perspective, etc.)

We can refrain from the long list of schools with hires and questions marks? It makes it really hard to read and follow this thread. It's easier if you do what "washington state" did earlier. Even if you have a question about a specific school and you don't know who was hired (like FSU), it's easier to see what you are asking about/referring to if that is the only school in the post - or ask in the status of searches thread.

This is a very good idea. Otherwise using the search function gets difficult because these lists overwhelm the results.
