I'm a new user to this board and I realized yesterday just why I hate this whole concept so much. If someone posts that UVA, for example, has scheduled interviews (skype, phone, in-persons, etc), this doesn't at all mean that those not contacted don't have a shot. Instead, it means that UVA and other schools are jumping early to try and land the few top candidates that are out there. The market will clear, and those schools who couldn't get one of these folks will pursue a second round. The market will again clear, and the process repeats several times. I'm at a top 5 and there are many junior faculty here who were not contacted for an interview until Nov or Dec. Who were they contacted by? None other than the Princetons, Wisconsins, Cornells, etc. If you read my post and think I'm being snarky, I'm not. Instead, I'm sick of reading these boards (which are helpful, don't get me wrong) and feeling despondent about the fact that I'm out of the running for a position that has moved forward, IN OCTOBER mind you, for interviews. So, starting today, I'm trying to read these boards in this light. Sure, I may already be out at a few positions; but, in talking with junior faculty here, many of the schools interviewing now will still be interviewing (different people)come Nov and Dec. Hang in there everyone!

That may be true for the top few hiring departments, but in most cases, when you don't make the first cut for phone interviews or similar, you're out.

Thanks, one thing all, for your encouraging comment. All of us who come here are a little bit obsessive and over-anxious, and the forum, with its constant stream of bad news (nobody ever gets their good news through an online forum! only bad news here!) can be really depressing. Thanks for injecting some well-informed perspective and calm into the stressfest on here.

Happy to do what I can. I went to my advisor that other day really fretting about the fact that I didn't get an interview request from a certain school that I had my eye on. Their response (which is what I previously communicated) put things in perspective and I'm feeling much less anxious about this whole terrible process of going on the market.

What you didn't mention that a lot of top schools don't need to hire. If the five people they are interested in all go elsewhere, they can wait a year for fresh faces. For what it's worth, I am also at one of those departments with overblown egos. Ever year, we make a list of four to six candidates for a junior open search. We then invite those folks, rank them, and make offers to two or three. I imagine that departments use different strategies though.

That may be true for the top few hiring departments, but in most cases, when you don't make the first cut for phone interviews or similar, you're out. I agree. I suppose there is some minuscule possibility that UVA's entire long list will take other jobs, but it is probably safe to take the Charlottesville Zillow page off your bookmarks list if you're like me and didn't get a Skype invitation.

Just want to confirm this.
I got an invite for a Skype interview as well. Not totally sure, but it sounds like they are doing these with about 12-15 candidates.

To those with interviews: did UVA ever contact your references?

Yes, one of my letter writers told me on the same day I got the email that he/she had been contacted to submit a letter.
