So the search is going on, they are bringing three candidates that are not the "stars" of this market. All from top schools, two of them ASR-AJS types.

I don't know who's interviewing in this case, but it is common for very top departments to be generous and wait a long time for a candidate to decide, sometimes to negotiate postdoc or spousal opportunities, after an offer goes out. They are comfortable with the possibility of losing their preferred candidate to a failed search and take a candidate-centric mindset.

Please don't try to get around the no names rule by asking which school candidates are from, or by releasing other information that might make them identifiable.

So are we imagining these candidates have offers elsewhere?

Yeah. A bunch of posts were deleted that did not betray any real info about the candidates but were debating whether or not other schools with offers out would wait as long as is required for NYU to conduct interviews.

NYU is indeed interviewing three juniors next semester. The reason why we are late is because we only had permission to hire a jr. if a senior we had an offer to declined it. S/he was supposed to make a decision early fall but did not decide till 2 weeks ago. We had actually created a search committee and decided on candidates months ago but had to wait. At this point, 3 of our top 4 choices are still available to interview and so we decided to move forward. Whether or not any of the candidates actually accept an offer, we are happy with who we are interviewing--they are not "backups." NYU can have its dysfunction for sure, but I would hope that folks would see it as a good thing that we are deciding to keep the search alive and try to hire a jr. rather than just being another canceled search.

I don't know about failed searches but I know NYU is bringing two people, not three, in to interview.

I heard about failed searches as well but I also think that some ended up as senior/associated positions. It is certainly time that they hire a junior person!

What's going at NYU? I am curious how that plays out. Have the job talks been announced?

NYU has a ridiculously long break so the talks are happening soon. Based on previous years, I don't think they'll announce the name of the person.
Can we confirm if it's two or three candidates?
