Received a request for more materials from Skidmore this afternoon. The email suggested this was the next step in the process. "Our search committee has reviewed your application for the Assistant Professor of Sociology position at Skidmore College, and I am pleased to write to request more information from you. Within the next week, would you please send us the following". Anyone else get this?

Yes, I did.
And if you read the job advertisement on Skidmore's job website, it says "After an initial review of applications, a short list (my emphasis) of final candidates will be asked to submit additional materials, including academic transcripts, course descriptions, sample syllabi, course evaluations, and a writing sample."
Whether or not this does, in fact, mean a short list has been constructed, we don't know...but it is promising.

Got the same e-mail. Interviewed at ASA. Doesn't seem like that list is all too short

Weird that your email is just coming now, almost 3 weeks after everyone else. I wonder what that means...

Clearly they want to widen the pool of candidates.

Has anyone heard anything after the initial request for more materials? Anyone been so bold as to email the search chair?

No you do not email the search chair to ask questions like what's on this board. The only exception is when you are being considered as a finalist at the campus visit stage and have another job offer in hand.

The only exception is when you are being considered as a finalist at the campus visit stage and have another job offer in hand. It is definitely not a terrible idea to email the search chair to ask questions about your application especially if you were also asked to send additional documents two weeks ago. I do not see any problems with this. Also, who's the search chair? S/he is a faculty, right? Do not assume that you are emailing to the U.S. president. Some folks take SC members so seriously.
