My advisor let me know he received a request to submit a letter of recommendation for the position at University of Illinois - Chicago.
The original application only asked for the letter writer's contact information, so perhaps this represents some movement on the position.

The job post reads : Applicants should go to jobs.uic.edu (click on the Job Board and then the position), complete the online application (please include the names and email addresses of 3 references), include a letter of interest, statement of research and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, and writing samples. Referees will receive an email with instructions about how to submit their letter of recommendation through the online system. So letters are in fact part of the application package.

There you go. I stand corrected. I couldn't remember if I had entered contact info to be stored in the online application or if I had just submitted a separately uploaded pdf file with contact information (which would have meant someone would have had to read it and decide "yes, we'll contact these people."

The UIC jobad does not match the description within the actual UIC online application, which essentially says that they will contact references if they are interested. They are not contacting everyone's references, so this is a sign of some interest.

Is this thread about the Soc or the Comparative Human Development position?

The comparative human development job is for university of Chicago. This thread is for UIC. They're different schools.

One of my referees told me he was contacted already two weeks ago, so before the application deadline. That made me think it was standard procedure.

My committee was contacted almost immediately after I submitted my application. So, not sure if letter requests are any indication.
The wiki says that UIC has asked for additional materials. Was the poster referring to letter requests or other materials?

I was referring to letter requests only. I suppose they could still ask for transcripts, more writing samples, and some course syllabi.

I wonder if there's a better way to handle these kinds of things here and on the wiki.
In many cases a request for letters is system generated and means zip. In other cases, it means a winnowing down.
Is there a better way to report these things so that people don't get unnecessarily sad/happy when they see an update on SuperDuper University's job thread only to find out it's not really an update on the search just a reporting of the system moving their application along?
Maybe there's not, but it seems like there could be some standardization so the newbies don't read too much into a robot-generated message to their advisors?

So is the consensus that everyone got an auto letter? I haven't asked my recommenders about this school specifically but I also don't think there's any reason they would think to mention it to me if it came to them with a bunch of other auto requests...and they are all long distance so I don't want to bother them unnecessarily.

The request for recommendation letters is not automatically generated. The search committee has not requested letters from every candidate.
