I got a desk rejection because my theory was "not sufficiently innovative". If I have to pay $25 to get a review, I would think you should come up with a better reason to reject. $25 doesn't entitle you to anything. Next time, write a better paper that can survive desk review at a mid-level journal like Social Problems. Social Problems is ranked 5th by Journal Citations Report and has an impact factor of 1.796. How is it "mid-level"?

How long are people waiting on reviews at SocProb these days? I submitted four months ago and it has said "awaiting editor decision" for the last two months.

if you're in ASA, they put out a publishing guide that includes average review times for many journals. The 2017 guide says the average review time for Social Problems was 23 weeks. I know I waited three months for a decision last year. They also have an 8 percent acceptance rate.

I took Social Problems 8 months to reject my article. Don't mind the rejection, but was pretty angry about the wasted time.

Eight months is a ridiculously long time to wait for a rejection. Is this the standard for Social Problems or is the ASA right and the average wait is really closer 23 weeks?

It took me four months to get a desk rejection. No reviews. That is a lot of wasted time.

10 months to rejection

10 months for a refereed rejection. I inquired after 4. They happily informed me that I shouldn't be worried since the average time to decision was only 6 months (!). Checked in again at 7 months. Lots of apologies. I checked again in at 9 months. No specific reply, except an apology in the decision letter.
They have a new editorial team now and I can only hope it's better.

Reading about your experience really ticks me off. Unacceptable.

I had similar experience last year; 7 month wait + 3 subpar reviews + a rejection = never again. Unacceptable.

Like a lot of others I've been rejected there after a really long review time. The paper was just OK, but we did end up publishing it elsewhere
The thing that really struck me was how 1 of the 4 reviewers didn't really seem to know methods very well. They misinterpreted various statistics, and made several claims that were very odd. This wasn't the case of the reviewer suggesting that we use some new, cutting edge modelling strategy. Rather, they seemed to lack a second year graduate student understanding of quant methods.

I’ve had a positive experience with the journal. 4.5 months after submitting received an R & R. Got an acceptance 2.5 months after submitting revisions. 2/3 reviews were helpful and thorough.
