The Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality (CPI), one of three National Poverty Centers, is a nonpartisan research center dedicated to monitoring trends in poverty and inequality, explaining what’s driving those trends, and developing science-based policy on poverty and inequality. The CPI supports research by new and established scholars, trains the next generation of scholars and policy analysts, and disseminates the very best research on poverty and inequality.
The CPI seeks a senior editor to lead its communications and dissemination activities, including responsibilities for print and web-based publications. The senior editor will also be responsible for publications associated with CPI’s parent organization, Stanford’s Institute for Research in the Social Science (IRiSS).
The primary responsibilities of the position include:
• Serving as senior editor for Pathways Magazine (in collaboration with the Center’s Director). Editorial tasks include planning magazine cover stories, soliciting articles by top scholars, editing articles, writing occasional short magazine pieces, and coordinating with the magazine’s designer, copyeditor, and proofreader.
• Overseeing and developing content for the main website of the Center (www.inequality.com) and for its two new affiliated websites for the Recession Trends initiative (www.recessiontrends.org) and the California Welfare Laboratory (www.c-well.org). Tasks include featuring poverty and inequality news, reporting on the Center’s research, managing the Center’s new working paper series, managing the new Recession Trends initiative (that features regular reporting on recession-relevant research and trends), and locating and reporting on relevant research on poverty in California.
• Overseeing the development of podcasts featuring Center research projects (in collaboration with the Center’s podcast producer).
• Research and write a monthly newsletter for the CPI and IRiSS as well as articles that highlight Stanford scholarly research across the social sciences.
• Recruit, train, and supervise an undergraduate and graduate team of student interns working on writing projects.
Candidates should have excellent writing skills suitable for both print publications and website content. An advanced degree in the social sciences is required, and a research background in poverty and inequality topics is preferred.
