Description:
The Stanford Historical Society Oral Historian is the key professional member of the Stanford Historical Society oral history team, which defines Stanford University's oral history program, scope, standards, and future direction. S/he works closely and in partnership with the University Archivist, the Stanford Historical Society Oral History Committee chair(s), and the Stanford Historical Society Administrative Officer.
Duties:
Serve as a senior mentor, role model and coach, bringing knowledge of the professional standards of the oral history profession to Stanford's program.
Carry out high priority interviews (approximately 20 - 30 a year) from start to completion---including but not limited to archival research, interviewing, editing, following up with interviewees, and preparing final interview materials for deposit in the University Archives.
Create training materials and direct workshops for oral history volunteers.
Collaborate with the Stanford Historical Society Administrative Officer to assign, advise and work with volunteers on methodology and best practices (including such areas as resources for background research, drafting and refining interview questions, editing and indexing transcripts).
Identify and prioritize oral history topics, themes, and individual interviews to be pursued.
Set standards and ensure quality control throughout the oral history program, for example, documenting best practices, reviewing completed interviews, and advising on resolution of sensitive issues as they arise.
Serve as the University's professional oral history advocate, speaking and writing about Stanford's oral history program.
Identify oral history opportunities of potential interest to outside funding sources and prepare proposals for oral history program support.
Work with providers from within and outside the University to evaluate current technology appropriate for capturing oral histories.
Maintain a broad network of contacts with professionals engaged in oral history in order to promote professionalism and new ideas within the Stanford oral history program.
Qualifications & Skills:
Minimum BA degree (Masters degree preferred) with a specialization or interest in oral history or public history (e.g., history, journalism, communication, anthropology, sociology, public policy, library sciences)
Professional background in communication, journalism, media, history, or library science, with at least three years of demonstrated interviewing experience (including carrying out research and editing transcripts)
Experience developing and sustaining outstanding working relations with a very diverse community of faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and the extended Stanford family required
Excellent communication skills, as a role model, teacher, and advocate
Demonstrated writing and editing skills
Successful experience working as a team member and independently
Demonstrated organizational and project management skills
High level of proficiency with computer desktop applications required (Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat); experience with specialized oral history software desirable
Audio and video production and editing skills desirable
Prior experience working with volunteers highly desirable
In-depth understanding of the culture and organization of universities is required; prior experience and knowledge of Stanford University is highly desirable
Established connections within the oral history profession highly desirable
