Compared to other universities UTRGV doesn't pay well in Sociology. Some of the profs are getting short changed.

the cost of living in the area is very very cheap. And the university is experiencing high salary compression, as the older faculty were hired when it was two split teaching college campuses. And new hires are making more than tenured faculty (look at Texas Right to Know). The school is just now starting to operate at an R1 status.

Funny thing is other UT schools pay more and sociology makes less than other departments in the same college. The sociology program is dwindling and the grad program is always on the verge of closing.

The comment above is weird given that UTRGV now has the second highest budget in the UT system (after UT-Austin), and the sociology program is actually expanding quite rapidly. The program successfully hired five tenure track professors last year and is hiring for two more lines now. The grad program now includes a disaster studies MA option that has already attracted many new students, and there is a possible MD/Ph.D. program in the Sociology of Health in the works. They've actually had to hire additional adjuncts to cover all the demand for sociology courses.

I applied for their political soc/borders/latin@ soc/social movements position. No word yet. I think it is still pretty early though. In fact, I don't remember even seeing a posted deadline to apply so it may be very early.
