This is in regard to the UConn sociology dept's late advertisement to hire in the areas of sociology of culture and sociology of family. Deadline for apps was March 11th. Looks like they just finished the first round of cuts. Just got request for letters of recommendation. Best of luck to everyone at this stage.

I also received an email requesting letters of recommendation. I wonder how long this list is? Does everyone receive such request?

I didn't get one. Did they send the requests to the applicants or just the references?

directly to the applicants asking referees to email the chair.

Seems like a long, long list, but hard to tell. At this point know not to get any hopes up.

Seems like a long, long list, but hard to tell. At this point know not to get any hopes up. What makes you say the list seems so long? Inside info or mere speculation? Regardless, my hopes aren't up. I'm expecting to hear back on a couple of job talks this week and will likely have an offer long before they get around to my reading letters of recommendation. Unfortunate that they're moving so slowly on this aspect of the application process. If you're going to post a job ad at the end of the season, why not just have everyone send letters when they apply. Saves the SC a step and speeds things along. I appreciate that they don't waste everyone's time with unwanted letters, but it's late in the season and, hell, everyone else does it. Seems like a great job but there's no way I'm turning down an TT offer if it comes through in the next week or so. Good luck, all!

Seems like a long, long list, but hard to tell. At this point know not to get any hopes up. What makes you say the list seems so long? Inside info or mere speculation? For one thing it was not a personalized email. For another thing, the number of folks who just so happen to be posting about it here confirms that there are quite a few on the list. And... I'm sure they are well aware that it's late in the game, and they're smart, so makes sense to request references from quite a few folks.

In response to socpal's question, I got my request for recommendation letters this past Sunday. Anyone get a request after that? Anyone get a formal rejection yet?

I am simply assuming that no request for a letter of recommendation = rejection.

Got mine on Sunday, too. I would not assume you've been rejected if you didn't receive a request, but you likely did not make the initial cut. This late in the game, anything is possible so hang in there.

When I was on a Spring TT search committee, we took this approach and asked for rec letters from about 15 people. We then did phone interviews with 7-8 and identified interviewees from there.
