One of the sociologists is an infectious disease modeler, one is a formal demographer, and one is a social historian, so even though they're all sociologists, they all seem to have at least a foot in a different field.

That seems unlikely: we finalists all got an email about the program ending five days before the rankings (for both sites and finalists) were due. We got the email on the next business day after the Columbia interviews, in fact. Surely they told the site directors before they told us?
