I am not a native writer and gonna submit a paper to a journal. My advisor suggested to have my paper polished before sending it out. I found this editing service recommended by some journals prof-editing, but its pretty expensive (for a 30 page long paper). Does anyone know any good service for academic editing, particularly for sociology papers? Thank you.

Had a friend in a similar situation. I forget the service they used, but I remember them saying that it cost around $200 for a paper of similar length. I don't think they could find any other reputable places that were much cheaper. I do know that the service has been used by several academics though.
I'm not sure if there are places with sociologists who do the editing, but if it were me I'd have my advisor or a colleague edit the paper for substance and just have the service do the copy-editing.

What I would do is choose one of your classmates who you know is a great writer and ask them if they'd be willing to copy-edit your paper for $20-25 an hour. If it's in okay shape, it shouldn't take more than 5-6 hours total. I've worked for one of these large academic editing services and never made more than $15/hr for my work, even though they charged much more and took out taxes. Trust me, you will save money this way and have a lot more accountability than sending it to one of these companies.

I once used a company, globalprofessoriate, on the advice of my Master's supervisor. She may have worked for the company, I'm not really sure. But, I do know that they were quick, helpful and professional. Their strength as a company is that all of their editors are either ABDs or current professors in the field of your work. Good luck!

Before I gained tenure, I used to work (on a contract basis) for www.globalprofessoriate.com. They employ scholars who are exceptional teachers from a variety of social science and humanities disciplines. This means that your disciplinary jargon *and* your ELL background will be understood and considered in the editing process. As mentioned above, GP is quite good. Be sure to ask for Sean (if he's still there). Anyway, that's my two cents, for what it's worth. Best.

Oops. Sorry for the multiple posts. On the last MSG, the end parenthese got attached to the hyperlink. The editor's website I mentioned is: www.preciseediting.info/

I also used www.globalprofessoriate.com and found it great quality service for a reasonable price. My PhD supervisor suggested it for my postdoc application. A friend used GP for her Master's thesis.

I am often using [eww, gerund] the [unnecessary definite article] www.journalprep.com/ and these [incorrect plural] provide the [unnecessary definite article] great editing services on [incorrect word choice] best price. You [poor stylistic choice of second person; prefer indefinite pronoun] can also use this for your paper editing, English editing, and dissertation editing [unnecessary repetition] etc. Thanks [punctuation and inappropriate informality] Actual, competent editing: "I often use XXXX, which provides great editing at a reasonable price. One can also use it to edit your paper, general English prose, or dissertation. Thank you! What were we talking about again? And why am I the only person on this board who has a profile picture? Wait, have I been hired to promote an editing company while, ironically, I lack the ability to clearly express myself in written English?"

I've had very good experiences with Grey Editing, greyediting.com/The editor, Sarah Grey, has experience with papers and books for academic audiences, and also with academics writing for commercial audiences. (I first encountered her work because I used to work for a press that employed her.) She also has lots of experience working with people whose first language isn't English. I believe her current rate is $35/hour (when discussing the project with her, you would of course explain the kind of editing you wanted and get an estimate of the total cost before committing). It's not cheap, but I think it's underpriced for the service. It can be worth paying someone for great editing once and asking them to explain to you what mistakes you make consistently, so that you learn for the future. Obviously, though, this depends on your financial situation, and on how important this paper is to you.

I am an editor of academic documents in South Africa. I work alone with the help of certain software applications - and a lot of knowledge in the academic world...
