Decent turn around time. Good reviewers. Fair editor. Would submit again. I'll second this. Excellent editor, good turnaround, useful reviews (even though, looking back, my submission was not at all a good fit for an urban soc journal). Would definitely submit again.

say decent turn around time, what does that mean? 3 months? 6 months?
Thanks!

Recent experiences? (2014)

Any recent experience with timing and reviews? I submitted a manuscript 8 months ago, received one follow up apology email 4 months ago stating that the reviewer would submit comments that weekend and the editor would contact me with their decision shortly after. I sent a follow-up email 2 months ago asking for an update, and received a similar response (the reviewer would submit his/her comments soon, etc.). Has anyone else had this experience? From my own past experiences with this journal, and in talking with friends this seems like quite a bit of time to wait - so I'm not sure if something is going on over there. Thoughts?

Having a similar experience, with a ms being there for 8+ months...

A couple of years ago, a colleague told me it took three or four rounds, almost a year after the first R&R, to have the paper accepted. The editor asked for different changes each time and the authors almost retired the paper, but they finally got it in.

I had a very different experience with them. They turned around a reviewer rejection to me within a month and a half. I felt the rejection was a little out of hand as one reviewer was positive. I then resubmitted the paper with few changes to the Journal of Urban affairs, was R&Red and accepted. It really comes down to what the editor likes, and what kind of reviewers you get.

Agree with above poster. The current editor is really particular about what she likes, and what counts as urban sociology. Reviewers are also very inconsistent.

It's good to hear a variety of responses, and to know that someone has had a ms sit there for 8+ months. I think it's a little long to wait, esp considering that we need pubs for jobs and promotions - it is what it is, I guess.

can you withdraw a manuscript from consideration if it is taking them too long and submit it somewhere else? or does that completely waste time already "invested" in this journal and the potentially helpful comments?

Gabriel Rossman tweeted the other day that he pulled an article that was under review (perhaps R&R; it was unclear) at Sociological Theory to submit to Sociological Science.
